Scholarships and Awards

Scholarships

Of the scholarships and awards in the College of Humanities and Sciences database, the following are offered to undergraduate students through the math department. They are supported by, or endowed in honor of, alums and former members of our faculty, in a tangible representation of their deep commitment to VCU and to mathematics as discipline.

  • James N. Boyd Merit Scholarship: The endowment fund was created through a gift from Mr. James Boyd, MS ’78. This scholarship is awarded to a meritorious incoming, full-time freshman planning to major in mathematics. The scholarship may be renewed for an additional three years provided the student remains in good academic standing.
  • Mary Lou Gibson Scholarship Endowment: This scholarship was established by J. Larry Gibson in honor of his wife, Mary Lou Gibson, who died on Feb.11, 2002. She was a retired adjunct instructor, and in 1986 became the first teacher-in-residence in VCU’s Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics. The recipient must be a rising junior or senior mathematics major with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and must demonstrate intent to teach mathematics.

Awards

Student Award in Mathematics

Each year, the department recognizes students for their substantial achievements in their mathematics program. To be considered for the Student Award in Mathematics, students need to graduate with an undergraduate degree from the department during the spring semester of a given academic calendar year. Students with a math major GPA above 3.5 at the time of award nomination will be considered for this award. Awards are presented during the spring semester.

Paul Minton Graduating Senior Award

Dr. Paul Minton was a former dean of the College of Humanities and Sciences, director of the Statistics Institute and faculty member in the Department of Statistics. In his honor, in 2002 the Department of Statistical Sciences and Operations Research created the Paul Minton Graduating Senior Award to recognize a graduating senior who has excelled academically, both inside and outside the classroom.

Excellence in Statistics and Excellence in Operations Research Awards

The Excellence in Statistics and the Excellence in Operations Research awards recognize graduating undergraduate students with majors in mathematical sciences/statistics and mathematical sciences/operations research, respectively. Academic performance, general contributions to the department and profession, and research and community engagement contributions are all considered in choosing the winners.
