Workshop on Stationary Sets and Algebra 2024
Dates: Monday, May 20, 2024 – Wednesday, May 22, 2024
Location: Academic Learning Commons, room 1100
The workshop will focus on topics in algebra that already have, or are likely to have, connections with set theory, especially those involving the nonstationary ideal and set-theoretic elementary submodel techniques. Recent examples of interactions of this kind include:
- Approximation theory (e.g., precovering & deconstructible classes in abelian categories, complete cotorsion pairs, weak factorization systems)
- Algebraic constructions associated with the nonstationary ideal (e.g., nonstationary support products of abelian groups).
The workshop will be a relatively informal mix of tutorials, discussion, and Q&A sessions. Tutorials will be given by:
James Gillespie (Ramapo College of New Jersey)
Alina Iacob (Georgia Southern University)
Brent Cody (Virginia Commonwealth University)
Sean Cox (Virginia Commonwealth University)
Please contact Sean Cox (scox9@vcu.edu) if you are interested in attending. Funds provided by the National Science Foundation will be used to reimburse some participant transportation and/or lodging expenses. Priority will be given to students and postdocs who do not hold federal research grants. Please request such funds as far in advance of the meeting as possible by contacting Sean Cox (scox9@vcu.edu).
Suggested arrival: afternoon/evening of Sunday, May 19.
Suggested departure: evening of Wednesday, May 22 or morning of Thursday, May 23.
